Never Miss Twice
One of my favorite rules for building habits comes from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits: “A habit missed once is a mistake. A habit missed twice is the start of a new habit. Never miss two days in a row.”
This simple yet profound principle has the power to transform the way we approach habit-building. Life is unpredictable; no matter how disciplined we aim to be, we’re bound to slip up occasionally. Maybe you missed your morning workout, skipped journaling, or forgot to plan your meals for the day. Missing once is understandable—it happens to everyone. But missing twice? That’s when the real challenge begins.
Why does missing twice matter so much? Because habits are built on momentum. Missing one day is like a small bump in the road; missing two days is like taking a wrong turn. The further off-track you go, the harder it becomes to find your way back. That second miss sets the tone for a new pattern to emerge—one that might not align with your goals.
